The miserable living conditions of the most vulnerable segments of society in the Theni district motivated a Social activist with other Social workers to form the MAITRI Society. MAITRI is a registered Voluntary Organization working for the welfare of the rural people particularly women and children irrespective of caste, color, and creed since 1992. MAITRI committee consists of 8 members from different walks of life. The board of members headed by a senior well-known women social worker as President and the program is headed by professional women Social Worker as Director.

                            The motto of the organization is to provide “Support Service to the Suppressed   Society for Sustainable Development”.

                            One can easily foretell the growth of any organization by witnessing the commitment, activities and achievement of that organization. MAITRI is one among such organization, progressively grown to work for the welfare of the humanity particularly women and children. The reporting period is yet another milestone in the history of MAITRI. During the period, there were new initiatives, which enhanced the services of MAITRI. 

                              Theni  is one of the South-Western districts of Tamilnadu . It has an area of 2889 Sq.Km. and a population of 10, 49,300. It’s main occupation is Agriculture. The nearest Railway station is Madurai and Dindigul which is 75 Kms. The nearest Airport is Madurai.

                             Up to 2006, MAITRI was working only in 11 Rural Panchayats and 2 Town Panchayats of Theni Block .  Based on the need of the target people, MAITRI added another 7 rural Panchayats as its target area.  At present MAITRI is working in all the 18 rural and 2 Town Panchayats of Theni Block with a target population of more than 1,05,000.

                             In addition to the regular programs in Theni Block, MAITRI is also working in Cumbum and Aundipatty Blocks with specific programs.
