Anbagam Children’s Village:

When we intervene with the target people through our HIV/AIDS programs, we realized the importance to protect the young generation particularly the children below 10 years from the infection. We found more than 100 children became orphans due to HIV. Thus in addition to coping with the effects of chronic illness they must negotiate the problems associated with poverty. MAITRI discussed this issue with community and the staff and based on the need we have launched a "Foster Care" program, through which the children and the destitute women could benefit.

Children and women who were affected were identified from the area and brought together to live together in a common place. Each mother was provided with minimum 6-7 children to take care her self as well as the children.  Good education and healthy atmosphere is being provided to them. Both the children and women are given medical care and counseling.

MAITRI developed a campus exclusively for these children. We have identified 60 children below 10 years (both boys and girls) along with 9 housemothers to look after themselves as well as the children. MAITRI constructed 9 independent houses and each house is provided to a mother.  Good food, education and other medical facilities are being provided to these children. Children are studying in the nearby schools.

During this 4th Year, MAITRI have identified and admitted 3 more children.  This program provides a wide range of opportunity for the children for full participation and equalization of opportunity.  MAITRI takes all steps to provide counseling to the relatives of these children to pay visit at least once in a month mainly not to disengage their relationship with the children. This helps the children to feel secure about their relationship.
